FASTag KYV Rules for Cars in 2026: What NHAI Changed and What Drivers Should Do
November 8, 2026
Guide / explainer — updated 8 November 2026. This article explains an NHAI policy announced on 1 January 2026 and effective from 1 February 2026. It is not a new November announcement.
Drivers often encounter the terms KYC (Know Your Customer) and KYV (Know Your Vehicle) when buying or managing FASTags. They are not interchangeable. NHAI’s January 2026 announcement specifically changed post-activation KYV for car, jeep and van category FASTags. The change aims to prevent unnecessary follow-up verification after a bank has activated a tag.
What changed on 1 February 2026?
According to NHAI’s official press release dated 1 January 2026, routine post-issuance KYV was discontinued for newly issued car/jeep/van FASTags from 1 February 2026. Existing car FASTags also no longer require KYV as a routine process. A specific complaint may still lead to verification, including concerns about a loose tag, incorrect issuance or misuse. This does not mean every vehicle verification requirement has disappeared.
How new FASTags are verified
NHAI shifted responsibility for checking vehicle information to the issuing bank before activation. The announcement says banks must validate vehicle details against the VAHAN database. If the relevant details are unavailable in VAHAN, banks can use the vehicle’s Registration Certificate (RC) for exceptional verification before activation. FASTags bought online are subject to the same pre-activation checks. The previous allowance for post-activation validation was discontinued.
What existing FASTag owners should do
- Keep using an active, correctly issued tag: Do not assume you need to submit fresh KYV documents merely because the tag was issued before February 2026.
- Check the registration details: Ensure the tag is linked to the correct vehicle and remains properly affixed to the windscreen.
- Respond to a genuine issuer complaint: If your bank contacts you about a specific mismatch or suspected misuse, verify the request through its official app or customer-service channel before providing documents.
- Avoid unsolicited links: Never share an OTP, banking password or sensitive payment credentials in response to an unverified KYV message.
- Ask the issuer for the exact reason: If your tag is blocked or a document is requested, seek a written explanation rather than assuming the old routine KYV rule still applies.
Does this apply to trucks and buses?
The January 2026 announcement explicitly concerns the car/jeep/van FASTag category. It should not be interpreted as a blanket removal of verification requirements for commercial vehicles. Operators can also consult our truck and bus toll classification guide for a separate explanation of commercial toll categories.
KYV, KYC and FASTag annual passes: different checks
KYV concerns the vehicle’s identity and tag assignment. KYC concerns the customer’s identity and applicable banking requirements. A simplified post-activation KYV process does not cancel other lawful account checks or pass eligibility rules. For example, NHAI’s official annual-pass conditions require an active, functional FASTag attached to the same registered vehicle. Compare pass types in our FASTag annual pass versus local pass guide.
What if a FASTag fails at a toll plaza?
First establish whether the problem is a low balance, a blocked tag, an incorrect vehicle mapping or a lane reader issue. Ask the issuing bank to check account-specific problems. For a highway service complaint, NHAI’s Rajmargyatra portal provides complaint facilities and the 1033 highway helpline. For fee questions, see our guide to checking toll plaza charges. Do not assume a failed scan automatically means a KYV violation.
Frequently asked questions
Is KYV completely abolished?
No. NHAI removed routine post-activation KYV for car/jeep/van FASTags. Specific complaints can still prompt checks, while issuing banks must validate vehicles before activating new tags.
Must I replace my existing FASTag?
Not merely because of the February 2026 KYV change. A damaged, incorrectly assigned or otherwise invalid tag may need attention from its issuer.
Can online FASTags skip vehicle verification?
No. NHAI specifically said online purchases must undergo complete bank validation before activation.
