Wrong FASTag Toll Deduction? How to File a Complaint in India
November 8, 2026
A toll debit that does not match your journey can be frustrating. This practical guide explains how to collect evidence, contact the correct organisations and escalate a disputed FASTag deduction. It is an evergreen service explainer, not a report of a new rule or incident.
First, check whether the debit is actually incorrect
Compare the transaction message or bank statement with your journey date, vehicle registration number, toll plaza name and the amount charged. A notification may arrive after the vehicle crossed the plaza; do not assume the notification timestamp is the crossing time. Check whether a return-trip concession, vehicle category or an annual or local pass should apply. Keep in mind that eligibility depends on the applicable rules and plaza.
What evidence should you save?
Record the transaction reference, debit amount, approximate crossing time, plaza name, vehicle registration number, FASTag issuer bank and any available trip or toll receipt. Keep screenshots of SMS alerts and the issuer’s transaction history. If you believe a vehicle was elsewhere at the stated time, note that fact and retain supporting records. Do not share OTPs, passwords or full banking credentials with anyone claiming to resolve a toll dispute.
Step 1: Raise the issue with your FASTag issuing bank
Start with the bank or provider that issued your FASTag. Use its official app, website or verified customer-care number, select the disputed transaction and ask for a complaint or dispute reference number. Explain why the debit appears wrong and attach evidence. Ask whether additional documentation is needed and track the case through the issuer’s formal process. Avoid submitting the same dispute repeatedly without referencing your existing ticket.
Step 2: Contact the national highway helpline 1033
For National Highway fee-plaza issues, NHAI identifies the toll-free 1033 helpline as a 24-hour complaint channel. State the plaza, travel time, vehicle registration and bank complaint reference. Ask for the complaint number so you can follow up. The NHAI Citizen Charter lists a 30-day service standard for FASTag complaints such as incorrect deductions or blacklisting; this is not a promise that every bank reversal will complete within that period.
Step 3: Use Rajmargyatra and the designated complaint channels
The official Rajmargyatra service provides toll information and a complaint facility. A Ministry of Road Transport and Highways reply dated 22 July 2026 also identifies the email falsededuction@ihmcl.com and FASTag issuer-bank helplines as available channels for fee-related complaints. Include the minimum information necessary to identify the transaction, and use official contact points rather than numbers supplied in unsolicited messages.
How to follow up effectively
Keep one chronological record of your bank ticket, 1033 reference, submission dates and responses. If the bank says the deduction is valid, ask which plaza, timestamp, vehicle classification and applicable toll rate were used. If a correction is approved, check your account history to confirm the credit. If the dispute remains unresolved, use the issuer bank’s published escalation or grievance process. The correct next step can vary by issuing institution and the nature of the complaint.
Preventing future disputes
Keep your registered mobile number current, review FASTag transactions after long journeys and ensure the tag is linked to the correct vehicle. Check the official plaza rate before travelling, especially if you use multiple vehicle types. Keep your FASTag secure and avoid using a tag on a different vehicle. For regular users, review the specific conditions of any annual or local pass rather than assuming every toll plaza is covered.
Frequently asked questions
Can I dispute a toll debit if I never visited that plaza?
Yes, report the mismatch to the issuer and supply the transaction details and evidence of your vehicle’s whereabouts where available. An investigation is required; a refund should not be assumed in advance.
Is 1033 available at all hours?
NHAI’s official Rajmargyatra website describes 1033 as a free 24×7 national highway assistance helpline.
Does an annual FASTag pass cover every toll?
No. Eligibility is limited to designated National Highway and National Expressway fee plazas, and the vehicle and pass must meet the published terms. Check the official eligible-plaza list.
